NukeTape®

Distinctive blue and white NukeTape® is certified for splices in safety-related applications in harsh environments.

For 25 years, a major manufacturer of electrical cable and related products, supplied the nuclear power industry with it's T-95 insulating tape and #35 Jacketing Tape, the only such tapes "qualified" for use in safety-related applications in harsh environments within nuclear power plants. UCI distributed these products to many of our clients in the nuclear power industry.

In 1996, that company abandoned the manufacture of their nuclear power qualified tapes to focus on their larger core markets. Their withdrawal left the $2 million nuclear power market to the complex and expensive heat shrink system - a system that technicians find difficult to use and one that requires a large inventory of parts and tools.

UCI's experience in the industry with the tapes and our analysis of the competitive products suggested that a qualified tape that offered advantages over the heat shrink system would meet with robust demand. UCI engineers evaluated a number of potential alternatives seeking a tape that would out-perform and out-sell the competition. The criteria was demanding:

It had to be tough
NukeTape® survived the grueling qualification testing required by the nuclear power industry.

It had to go on easy
NukeTape® adheres to itself and requires nothing more than a pocket knife for application.

It had to come off clean
NukeTape® leaves no residue.

It had to be versatile
NukeTape® is capable of insulating any terminal or splice without special jacketing.

It had to be cost-effective
NukeTape® offers all of the above at a price below the other products.

UCI engineers set out to develop a tape that met all the above criteria. They produced a formulation and configuration that looked promising. In February 1997, UCI commissioned Wyle Laboratories to undertake the exhaustive series of tests that would qualify UCI splicing tape for Safety-related nuclear/harsh applications. In September 1997, testing was completed and found the UCI Tape exceeded our most optimistic expectations. What's more, the tape proved to be the answer to a technician's prayer - very versatile and remarkably easy to use. In December 1999, the UCI Tape was trademark-registered as NukeTape® and is now the pure-bred of the market!
